I think a subtle hover state is a great idea. I decided not to include it just so I could keep this post simple for those that are new to the background alignment/sprite concept.
I’m a big fan of sprites. I’d be curious to see any studies done on the bandwidth/processor costs/benefits of using one big sprite for all your app’s icons as opposed to loading each one up separately.
The notion of stacking classes with respect to background images is interesting. I’ll have to give it a shot.
